Description
The kiss is a subject to which Munch returned several times between 1895 and 1902.
He first explored the motif in a painting and an etching before embarking on this woodcut version, which emphasises a more simplified and abstract composition.
For this print, Munch cut out the figures from a block of wood, roughly removing the faces and hands. On top of this he printed a piece of wood with a strong vertical grain in a light shade of grey, giving the impression that the kiss is as elemental as nature itself. See more
The result is a deeply resonant image, a timeless symbol of intimacy and unity.
The kissing couple is placed monumentally in the centre of the image. The figures are considerably simplified and almost merge with each other. The motif expresses harmony, empathy and warmth.
