From Middle English marigolde, marygoldye, from Mary (“referring to the Virgin Mary”) + golde (“marigold”).
Marigold or marigold (Calendula officinalis), is a species of short-lived perennial herbaceous plant often cultivated as an annual, with yellow or orange-yellow flowers, whose flowering begins in the first days of spring and can last almost all year. It is sometimes called garden marigold.
